The work
Earth Stability was awarded this lump-sum contract through competitive tender, with Soil & Rock Consultants appointed as engineer.
The project required a 50-metre palisade wall formed from 750mm and 900mm diameter reinforced concrete piles installed to nine metres deep, together with a 50-metre reinforced concrete capping beam.
The ground support works included ten 12-metre drilled and grouted tie-back anchors, 90 drilled and grouted soil nails, 160m² of MacMat R rockfall mesh and 50m³ of reinforced shotcrete infill between the piles. Earthworks, landscaping, planting and fencing were completed as part of the reinstatement.
The project repaired the clifftop and reinstated land lost from four properties in St Marys Bay following a large landslip in 2023. The site lies within a Significant Ecological Area, directly above the public walkway and Northern Motorway.
Access was restricted to narrow points between the four properties. A project-specific methodology protected the sensitive environment, maintained public safety below the work site and minimised disruption. The work was completed on time, to specification and on budget.
