The work
Earth Stability was awarded this project through competitive tender, with Initia appointed as engineer.
The work included temporary slope protection and environmental controls, soil nails of varying lengths totalling 1,076 drilled metres, 780m² of reinforcement mesh and native planting.
The site comprised four large townhouses at a private residence in Parnell. The slip occurred following the 2023 Auckland Anniversary weekend weather event, with further land movement after two additional weather events during the works.
Temporary protection was installed promptly to prevent further land loss and property damage while the final design and council permissions were completed.
The work area was behind the dwellings, with extremely restricted access and a cliff directly above the coastal environment of Hobson Bay. Temporary access protection, specialised rope-access teams and specialist plant enabled the work to proceed with minimal disruption to homeowners.
Strict environmental controls were maintained throughout. A detailed methodology managed risks near the worksite, protected the sensitive coastal environment and kept residents safe from future weather events. The work was completed on time, to specification and on budget.
